Great Numbers Give Great Message

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped to 4.54 percent, almost a full percent lower than the 5.25 percent of last year. Other positive signs prevail in the 15-year fixed rate which also hit a record low of 4 percent, smaller than the 4.69 percent from last year. Also, the five-year adjustable rate mortgage averaged 3.76 percent, better than the 4.75 percent from last year. To add, the one-year ARMs average 3.64 percent compared to 4.8 percent of last year.

Maine home sales jump 63 percent in April

Home sales in Maine surged in April as homebuyers rushed to take advantage of record-low mortgage rates and the federal home buyer tax credit.

Sales of existing single-family homes jumped by 63 percent over April 2009. The median sales price increased 3 percent, to more than $165,000.

In all, real estate agents sold 994 homes in Maine in April, up from 610 a year earlier.

Home Sales in the West Surge 17 Percent in March

Home sales surged 17 percent in the West last month, as buyers scrambled to take advantage of low mortgage rates and qualify for tax credits that expire at the end of this month. Nationwide, by contrast, sales of previously occupied homes rose almost 20 percent from March of last year, without adjusting for seasonal factors. The median sales price was flat at $170,700.
